Frequently Asked Questions

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a professional conversation and relationship providing a safe, reflective and confidential space to explore and discuss different aspects of your life facilitating growth, performance and development. It uses solution-focused evidence-based practices and at its core lies the belief that you are the expert in your own life. With the right supports and resources, you can achieve your goals, both personally and professionally.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

In short, counselling and other forms of therapy are focused on understanding and resolving what has happened in the past and healing emotional pain from the past. Coaching is a structured methodology that focuses on the present and future as we work together finding practical solutions to real-life issues.
Sometimes we will delve into the past to explore and expose limiting beliefs or unhealthy ways of being, if it's helpful. As your coach, your wellbeing is my top priority and if I believe that other forms of therapy may be more beneficial, I will recommend them.

What qualifications do you have?

You might be surprised to learn that coaches do not need to have specific qualifications. Therefore, it is important that you do your research prior to choosing a coach to work with.

What is coaching like?

I know from my own first-hand experience and my clients would also agree that coaching is an interesting and fascinating experience. Taking that space and time to spend on You with your goals or situation as the main topic for discussion and exploration lead to many insightful Aha moments! However, it can be tough! Sometimes uncomfortable feelings of resistance, confusion and self-doubt come to the fore, when the real work is happening and that is when the coach's skillset also come to the forefront.

How do I know if I am ready for coaching?

Before any coaching conversations occur, we discuss your commitment to your coaching and your self-development. Are you willing to commit and invest your time, money and energy into this programme? I may ask you to complete activities between sessions but only if you want. This is your journey so the more effort you out in the more you will achieve! Remember the only way through is through but I am always there to support you if it does get tough! Our time spent together can be as short as 1 session or it can be as long as you need. I'll be here to guide you on your journey until you reach your goals or you're ready to go solo!

How do I find a coach that suits me?

As coaching becomes more popular you realise that there are many different coaches out there all offering something different. When I choose a coach there are a few key things I look for. The most important point is that connect with them, and I genuinely believe they can help me. Not everyone gets access to my inner world, so recommendations are highly valued, and I do lots of research. Another key point is the coach's qualifications and experience. Coaching remains an unregulated field and although this is changing there are many very well-intentioned but unqualified coaches out there. It is important to me that my Coach is accredited with a professional association with a clear Code of Ethics (for example the BPS / EMCC) and are formally qualified in either psychology or coaching.
